Who we are

Foundation of the Rosenthal Center

The Rosenthal Center was established within the Phoenix House Foundation in 2007, under the leadership of Mitchell S. Rosenthal, M.D, founder of Phoenix House. Over the following years the Center undertook a limited number of projects to advance clinical practice and contribute meaningfully to public policy. In 2015, Dr. Rosenthal resigned his role as part of the Foundation’s leadership team and the organization’s principal spokesman to head a now independent Rosenthal Center.

Our Mission

The mission of the Rosenthal Center, as defined today, is to meet the informational needs of men, women, and families grappling with addiction, of behavioral healthcare professionals in the treatment field, and of those policy makers whose decisions determine availability of and access to clinical and social services for the victims of addiction. Reflecting its Phoenix House origins, the Center brings to this mission a special concern for the most vulnerable victims of addiction, whose broad ranging needs present a critical challenge to the priorities of the nation’s health care reform initiatives.

What dictates the Center’s efforts are today’s changing patterns of drug use and those—often flawed and misinformed—perceptions of drug use, addiction, and recovery that influence behavior, shape policy, and may determine treatment strategies. Initiatives of the Center will include surveys, studies, colloquia, publication, and a forceful presence on the Internet, social media, and broadcast and cable news outlets.

Mitchell S. Rosenthal, MD

Founder
Mitchell S. “Mitch” Rosenthal, M.D. is president of the Rosenthal Center for Addiction Studies a nonprofit institution designed to meet the informational needs of healthcare professionals, policy makers, and members of the public confronting issues of drug use and addiction.

Bio
A pioneer in the treatment of substance abuse, Dr. Rosenthal was founder of Phoenix House, the nation's leading private, non-profit provider of substance abuse services. He began work in the field in 1965 as a psychiatrist at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California (1965-1967), where he established the first service-sponsored therapeutic community, successfully treating both alcoholics and drug addicts.

As a leading advocate for the treatment community, Dr. Rosenthal chaired the New York State Advisory Council on Substance Abuse from 1985 to 1997. He has been a White House advisor on drug abuse and a special consultant to the Office of National Drug Control Policy. A graduate of Lafayette College, Dr. Rosenthal earned his medical degree at the State University of New York's (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center. He served his residencies - in adult, child, and community psychiatry at Kings County Psychiatric Hospital, and the Staten Island Mental Health Society. He is a lecturer in psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and was awarded an honorary degree (Doctor of Humane Letters) by SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 2002.

Chip Fisher

Board Member
Chip Fisher is a serial entrepreneur and President of Fisher Wallace Laboratories, a medical device company based in New York City which focuses on the treatment of both psychiatric symptoms as well as drug and alcohol addiction.

Chip was educated at Harvard University, and founded Fisher Wallace Laboratories in 2006 with the late Martin Wallace, Phd to market what is now known as the Fisher Wallace Stimulator, which is FDA cleared for the treatment of depression, anxiety and insomnia. The company has published research on the treatment of both drug and alcohol addiction, with the method of action being that cortical stimulation may be having an effect on the dopamine receptors, and the device may also be used to decrease anxiety and insomnia during detoxification.

Chip is a member of the advisory board of the Avery Fisher Artist Program, which grants prizes to outstanding instrumentalists each year, both in the form of the Avery Fisher Career Grant and Avery Fisher Prize, for achievement in the arts.

His other interests include painting, squash, horseback riding and non-fiction books. He lives with his wife and two sons in New York City.

Steve Ivy

Board Member
Steve Ivy started business in 1964, at the age of 14, advertising rare coins for sale in national publications. Six years later, at the age of 20, he incorporated and opened his business in a downtown Dallas high rise. In 1976 he incorporated a sister auction company. Steve managed the business as well as serving as chief buyer, buying and selling hundreds of millions of dollars of coins during the 1970’s and early 1980’s.

In 1982, James Halperin merged his company with Steve’s, and the name of the corporation was changed to Heritage. Steve’s primary responsibilities now include management of the marketing and selling efforts of the company, the formation of corporate policy for long-term growth, and corporate relations with financial institutions. He remains intimately involved in all 30 categories Heritage deals in today. Steve engages in daily discourse with industry leaders on all aspects of the fine art and collectibles business, and his views on market trends and developments are respected throughout the industry. He previously served on both the Board of Directors of the Professional Numismatists Guild (past President), and The Industry Council for Tangible Assets (past Chairman). Steve’s keen appreciation of history is reflected in his active participation in other organizations, including past board positions on the Texas Historical Foundation and the Dallas Historical Society. He is also an avid collector of Texas books and manuscripts and owns one of the finest collections in private hands.

Steve is a past Board Chair of the Dallas Challenge, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health, education and welfare of youth from the greater Dallas area. Steve is also a past Finance Chair of the Phoenix House of Texas. Phoenix House and its affiliates are collectively the largest non- profit alcohol and drug abuse treatment and prevention facility in the nation. Steve currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the National Center for Policy Analysis, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy research organization.

Lawrence Lederman

Board Member
Lawrence Lederman is Of Counsel at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy and serves as Chairman of the firm's international corporate practice. Mr. Lederman has served as Board Chairman of the Phoenix House Development Fund Inc., Director of The National Mentoring Partnership, Director of The New York Botanical Garden, and Director of The American Chess Foundation.

From 1966 - 1967, Mr. Lederman served as a law clerk for Chief Justice Roger J. Traynor of the California Supreme Court. Prior to joining Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, Mr. Lederman was a partner at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. As a leading corporate mergers and acquisitions lawyer, he helped shape many major corporate legal developments that have occurred over the past twenty years and authored Tombstones: A Lawyer's Tales from the Takeover Decades, published in 1992. He has served as Chairman of the Practicing Law Institute program on Corporate Restructuring and is a member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association. He currently teaches corporate law at New York University School of Law, where he has been an Adjunct Professor since 1974.

Ken Marlin

Ken Marlin is Managing Partner and Founder of Marlin & Associates.

For more than 30 years, Ken has advised scores of U.S. and international middle-market technology enabled firms on the best ways to buy, sell, grow and thrive.

Fifteen years ago, Ken embarked on a journey to create a different sort of investment bank. One that would meld the investment banking skills he learned on Wall Street and as a tech entrepreneur with values and principles Ken learned during the decade that he spent on active duty as U.S. Marine Corps infantry officer (principles such as courage, commitment, competence, discipline, teamwork, planning, respect, persevering in the face of adversity and trying hard to do the right things, for the right reasons, every time). It’s about being Always Faithful (“Semper Fidelis”).

Ken is the author of The Marine Corps Way to Win on Wall Street: 11 Key Principles from Battlefield to Boardroom, published by St. Martin's Press. It is a book that “…lays out a compelling vision to improve Wall Street and Main Street by returning to solid core values like taking the long view, behaving with honor, delivering excellence and working for a cause greater than money…” As Ken says: He no socialist and has no issue with making money – as long as it is done with honor. Immediately before founding M&A, Ken led the Business Information and Internet practice at the media merchant bank and private equity fund Veronis Suhler Stevenson. Along the journey, Ken has had many roles. Among others, he was Senior Vice President for Strategy and Acquisitions at Dun & Bradstreet, when D&B was a diversified multi-national holding company buying and selling many of the same sorts of tech and information businesses that M&A advises today. At D&B, Ken led more than 60 transactions while developing strategy in 13 countries.

Ken then took the position of President and CEO of Telekurs (NA) a global information technology and data firm owned by a consortium of Swiss banks. Four years later, with venture backing, Ken and his partners acquired a large portion of Telekurs NA and used that base to form Telesphere Corporation, where he was CEO. Later, Ken and his partners sold Telesphere to Bridge Information Systems, where he became Executive Vice President.

Ken earned a BA from the University of California (Irvine), an MBA from UCLA, and a post-MBA Advanced Professional Certificate in Corporate Strategy from New York University. He is a former Captain and infantry company commander in the U.S. Marine Corps (serving ten years on active duty including two tours in the Far East). Ken is quoted regularly in publications such as Business Week, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and the New York Post. He also has appeared on radio and television programs such as CBS News, BBC-Worldwide, Fox Business, Sirius XM Radio, Yahoo! TV, The Street.Com TV, and CNBC.

Ken is a believer in community service. He is a former board member of the American Red Cross of Greater New York, the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School and the Phoenix House Foundation. Currently, he is a Trustee of the Madison Square Boys and Girls Club. He also works to support the Wall Street Warriors Foundation and the BJ/SPSA Homeless shelter, where he and his daughter have been overnight volunteers. Ken lives in Manhattan with his wife, daughter, a cat, and turtle. He is a registered securities principal and holds licenses in series 24, 7, 62 and 63.

Shirley Lord Rosenthal

Board Member
Shirley Lord Rosenthal has served on the Board of Directors for Phoenix House Foundation, Inc. since 2006 and is a contributing editor at Vogue. She is an advisor to the Shorenstein Center for Media, Press and Public Policy at Harvard and to the American Academy of Dermatology. She also serves on the board of the New York City Police Foundation.

Ms. Lord Rosenthal was born in London where she worked in turn for three evening newspapers, first the Star, then The London Evening Standard and finally The London Evening News. On moving to New York, Ms. Lord Rosenthal became vice president of Colgate Palmolive running the Helena Rubinstein division. Ms. Lord is the author of five best-selling novels, two "bibles" of health and beauty and an autobiography. As well as contributing to Vogue, she writes for a number of magazines, including Departures.

Douglas E. Schoen

Board Member
Douglas Schoen is a Democratic campaign consultant and a founding partner and former principle strategist for Penn Schoen Berland. Mr. Schoen has authored numerous books and is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Fox News and other publications. He has lectured at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania and the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University.

Mr. Schoen worked for former President Bill Clinton, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a number of United States Senators and Governors. He has also worked for the heads of states of over 15 countries and large corporations such as Time Warner, Procter& Gamble and AT&T.

Annette Tapert

Board Member
Annette Tapert is a journalist and author. Ms. Tapert has served on the board of New Yorkers for Children and The Burden Center. She is also a member and serves on the board of directors of PEN, an international organization of writers committed to defending freedom of expression and advancing literature.

Ms. Tapert has written eleven books on a diverse range of subjects, including military history, fashion and iconic women who have defined the world of fashion, decorating and entertaining. Ms.Tapert's works, The Power of Style and The Power of Glamour: The Women Who Defined the Magic of Stardom, have been the source of inspiration for many fashion designers over the years. Additionally, Ms. Tapert has written articles for Vanity Fair, Travel & Leisure, Self, House & Garden, Town & Country, Harper's Bazaar, House Beautiful and Architectural Digest.
